|Crop|Seeds per cell|Cells|
|---|---|---|
|Pepper|2|12|
|4th of July|2|24|
|Roma|2|24|
|Sungold|2|18|
|Thyme|3|12|
|Rosemary|3|12|
In a few weeks, will purge the weaker-looking sprouts from each cell.
Didn’t plant cucumber, oregano, catnip – those will go outside after the last freeze.
Top shelf is for warmer plants; set to 75°. Middle shelf is for cooler plants; set to 75°. Bottom shelf not used. Maybe next year!
Lights are on a 16/8h timer interval. Fan is off.
The eraser ona fresh Dixon Ticonderoga #2 pencil is exactly 1/4” long - perfect for burying the seeds at the proper depth.
# 3/25 - Day 1
Discovered that the LED grow lights generate a LOT of heat! Temp stabilizied at 83° with the lights on, fan off. The heating pads didn’t even activate until nighttime.
Trying the fan on low, pointing upwards this time. Temp stabilized at 73° (mats set to 73°) – much better, although will draw more energy because of the fan, plus the mats are cycling once per hour. And I think it will dry out the soil faster.

# 3/28 - Day 4
Thyme and Sungold tomatoes popping up!
# 3/29 - Day 5
Sungold have exploded overnight! 4th and Roma starting to appear.
![[Pasted image 20250119194006.png]]
# 3/31 - Day 7
All the tomatoes are up! Rosemary not showing. Peppers are just barely starting to appear.
# 4/1 - Day 8
![[Pasted image 20250119194035.jpeg]]
![[Pasted image 20250119194038.jpeg]]
# 4/2 - Day 9
Algae has started to grow on the surface of the soil, turning it green. Apparently this is because we are keeping the soil too wet. Will have to tone down the watering.
# 4/5 - Day 12
Rosemary finally showing up. Peppers have been up a few days now. Primary tomato leaves are starting to appear.
# 4/6 - Day 13
Talked to garden center about the raised beds. They recommend a base of something to prevent it from compacting (sticks, newspapers), then, topsoil, and then 2-3 bags of “raised bed mix” on top of each 4x8 bed.
Topsoil is $32/yd, or $24/scoop.
# 4/9 - Day 15
Peppers slowly coming in. Top shelf of tomatoes all look great. Herbs are tiny still. Bottom shelf of 4th is very sad - maybe too hot? I think that pad is on 24/7.
Thinking about upsizing soon. Probably this week.

![[Pasted image 20250119194127.jpeg]]
# 4/13 - Day 19
Up-potted today! Nearly every tomato germinated - so in the future, don’t need to go 2 tomatoes per starter cell. Culled the weaker ones.
Left a few sad-looking peppers behind.
Abandoned the rosemary - wasn’t looking good. Kept the thyme in the cells.
Hooked up the third (bottom) shelf lights and heater to make room for everything

![[Pasted image 20250119194217.jpeg]]
# 4/16 - Day 22
Ever since up-potting, growth has taken off! Going to need more height soon. Still over a month before these can go outside.
![[Pasted image 20250119194233.jpeg]]
# 4/20 - Day 26
Downsized from three shelves to two, removing the middle shelves and one set of lights and heating pad. So it’s down to 4 lights and 2 pads. Discarded 4 each of the Roma, 4th, Sungold, and peppers to make room.
![[Pasted image 20250119194248.jpeg]]
# 4/28 - Day 34
Indoor plants looking great. This afternoon, built two 4x8’ raised beds, made of 5/4x6 decking and 2x4s. $150 out the door. Really happy with how they came out with minimal effort! Still needs to be dug out and leveled.
![[Pasted image 20250119194306.jpeg]]
# 5/5 - Day 41
It’s getting crowded in here! Peppers are looking amazing. Most of the tomatoes look okay. Some are yellow/shrivled and are probably not going to make it.
![[Pasted image 20250119194328.jpeg]]
# 5/7 - Day 43
High of 75 today, so took them for a walk!
![[Pasted image 20250119194339.jpeg]]
# 5/12 - Day 48
Transplanted!! Tossed nearly half the plants. Kept 8 inside, 4 in outside pots.
4x fourth, 4x sungold, 4x Roma, 4x pepper.
Planted cucumber, catnip, and oregano outside.
![[Pasted image 20250119194359.jpeg]]
# 5/16 - Day 52
Things are not going well. Lots of yellowish leaves with brown spots. I think it is blight, which I should have trimmed earlier to prevent it from spreading. I think the Hab was too humid. And also I should have up-potted much sooner, because the plants are looking very wimpy, especially after trimming.

# 6/13
The four tomato plants in pots are doing GREAT. There are already small tomatoes forming on the 4th and Sungold plants. Today I up-potted them and added cages – should have done this ahead of time, because it was a PITA to put the cages over the plant, and I lost a tomato in the process. ☹️
The tomatoes in the bed are doing okay, but they are FAR behind the potted ones. They look very spindly, but since I removed the blighted lower branches they look green and healthy.
Peppers are taking their time but maybe starting to do something?
Cucumbers are coming up as well, looking good.
Catnip and oregano did not come up at all. Thyme is doing okay but not growing much.
